The instructions for this neat little woollen needle case that can be stitched in less than an hour are offered for your personal use. The instructions may not be copied for commercial use of any kind.
Materials:
Woollen Blanketing
Doctor Flannel
1 spool Aurifil Lana for the embroidery
1 spool Cotton Mako' Ne 50 to use as the bobbin threadOptional:
Auritex Tear-Away embroidery stabiliser
Piece of print fabric to coordinate with Wool Blanketing
Needle case kits are available for purchase below
How to Make Needle Case:
Step 1;
Start with a piece of wool blanketing that is 6" x 12" (15cm x 30cm)
(You could use wool felt but I think the extra thickness of the blanketing works
best for this project)
Step 2:
Fold the fabric in half to make a 6" square book
and use the cotton Makó thread to run a basting stitch along the fold line to
act as a "registration" mark for positioning the embroidery design.
Step 3:
Open the fabric out again so that you can use the Lana thread to stitch a
machine embroidery, hand embroidery or appliqué design of your choice on the right hand side
(front cover of the book.)
I used a machine embroidery design from a Pfaff Creative Card but you could use any design of your choice.
If you plan to use a machine embroidery design you will need to stabilise the back of the Blanketing with the optional Auritex Tear-Away backing before inserting it into the embroidery hoop. Tear the stabiliser away from the embroidery when finished.
I recommend that you use Cotton Makó Ne 50 thread in the bobbin with the Lana embroidery thread..
Use a 100 Universal needle when stitching with the Lana thread.
Step 4:
Once you have finished the embroidery, or appliqué, if the rectangle has
been distorted trim it back into shape . A good finished size is 6" x
10" If you are adding the optional lining see Step
4B below.
Step5:
Use the Lana thread to Blanket Stitch around the outer edge of the trimmed
rectangle, by hand or machine.
Step 6:
Cut 2 rectangles of Doctor Flannel so that they are 1" smaller than the
book cover. (eg: 5" x 9" for a 6" x 10" trimmed book cover.)
Position the 2 rectangles of Doctor Flannel on top of each other in the centre of the wrong side of the Blanket rectangle. Baste in to place using the basting line from Step 2 as a guide.
Step 7:
Fold the book closed and stitch a straight line 1/2" from, and parallel to,
the fold to secure the Doctor Flannel and create a book "spine".
Optional Lining:
Step 4B
Cut the coordinating fabric the same size as the trimmed
embroidered
rectangle.
Press under a 1/4" seam to the wrong on all 4 edges.
Position the lining right side up on the wrong side of the blanketing and hand
hem into place.
Proceed to Step 5.
