How does a Longarm Quilting Machine work?

Quilting to the "Max" is an extension of the Heirloom category where the stitching is extremely close and/or involves extensive stops and starts.

Grids, circles & other line designs, including creative freeform & thread painting, where the designs are stitched 2" or closer together all fit into this category:

  • Baptist Fan & other circle designs
  • Close grids & cross hatching,
  • Echo quilting
  • Very fine stippling

Trapunto is a form of quilting where designs are padded or "stuffed" to create a three dimensional effect. Traditionally the padding was added by slitting the backing and threading a thick cord through the quilting design.

Today, with modern machine quilting techniques, it is no longer necessary to cut the backing to achieve the padded effect.

However the process is still slow and painstaking as the design is effectively quilted twice, and requires the use of two pieces of batting.

Firstly the batting which will create the padded effect is stitched into place on the reverse of the quilt top using water soluble thread. Any excess batting is carefully trimmed away leaving the padding only in the desired designs.

Secondly, the quilt top, last batting and quilt backing are stitched together in the normal manner.

Trapunto centre panel.JPG (92354 bytes) I made this sampler quilt as a shared activity with my patchwork friendship group, "The Free Spirits". When I set the blocks together I deliberately left open spaces in the light background where I could add some Trapunto. I added more trapunto in the dark setting triangles and border to maintain the design balance.

Using thread colours to complement the quilt.

When stitching Creative & Heirloom style designs it is possible to change thread colours to blend, or highlight, different features of the quilt. However a thread change fee does apply when more than one colour of thread is used in a quilt.

Speciality threads such as variegated, heavier weights and metallic thread are all available when quilting in the Creative & Heirloom style.

The use of metallic, & some heavier weight threads is not recommended on bed quilts that may require regular laundering.

100% Cotton thread is used for all quilting, unless otherwise specified, and a small surcharge applies. Read about the threads and see the extensive colour range of  Cotton Mako' threads.

Satin finished Aurilux polyester threads are also available for use on art quilts, wall hangings and tops where you want a touch of "jazz".
